The Cold Might Actually Kill It

So as I was driving in the parking lot, I was hearing a whining noise coming from what I thought was my transmission. Put it in park, rev the engine a couple times, and it persists. My engine is making a whining noise. Wut.

It was making weird noises on the highway this morning too. Maybe both the engine and transmission are freezing to death.

I also was behind one of my classmates who was e-brake sliding through damn near every turn. Looked like he was actually enjoying himself in a Cavalier.

Someone snuck a turbo on it last night.

I've seen those symptoms from power steering pumps and alternators in extreme cold. In the P/S case, it was just that the very old fluid was watered/contaminated/thick enough at low temps to make the pump work harder and whine. In the alternator case it was a bearing that, while serviceable, was not in the best shape and when the grease got thick below 0 F, it would make a whining noise. Hope it's something relatively simple like that for you.

Power steering pump? Probably not the engine.

Pulley, not engine. Any engine that makes a whining noise like that wont start again after it gets shut off. I just had to the do the power steering tensioner pulley on one of my cars. Worst design in the world, very cheap part.

Take the serpentine belt off and spin each pulley. Whichever one has the least smooth travel is the culprit.

make a recording of it, if you are unsure what is making said noise. Folks on here may be able to help with a diagnosis.

Check the power steering fluid level. Mine was a bit low and would scream in the cold.

I get the screaming power steering pump every winter, due to one specific Subaru o-ring letting air into the system (fortunately, it's cheap and easy to access). The screaming/whining is caused by cavitation in the pump (caused by air bubbles), so check your PS fluid level first and see if that fixes the problem.
